Film Athens is excited to share the upcoming, two-part program, sponsored by Art Rocks Athens and Georgia Humanities entitled "The Scene and the Screen: the Athens, GA/NYC Connection." NYC videographers Pat Ivers and Emily Armstrong will be presenting two screenings from their GoNightclubbing series, which is now a part of the Fales Library Downtown Collection at NYU.

The Scene and the Screen: The Athens, GA/NYC Connection: Part One
The first set of videos will be shown at Athens Cine on March 18 at 7:30 p.m., and will feature videos depicting the history of punk rock in NYC, as well as a full set of music from Pylon, which was recorded at Danceteria in NYC in the 1970's. A few songs from the Pylon set have been released by GoNightclubbing on YouTube, but this will be the first time that the entire performance will be screened in public. Following the videos, there will be a Q&A in the Cine Lab with Pat and Emily and the surviving members of Pylon: Michael Lachowski, Vanessa Briscoe Hay, and Curtis Crowe. Admission is free for both programs, but seating is limited so be sure and come early.

The Scene and the Screen: the Athens, GA/NYC Connection: Part Two
The next day at 2:00 p.m., there will be more videos at the UGA Special Collections auditorium on the second floor. Following a screening of Ivers and Armstrong's "greatest hits," there will be a panel discussion with Pat and Emily, plus Ruta Abolins, Director of the Peabody Collection at Special Collections, and Grammy-winning art professor emeritus Art Rosenbaum. Armstrong and Ivers will tell the story of how a closet full of videos ended up as a digitized collection at NYU. Pat and Emily's original recordings were made on ½” reel-to-reel, ¾” cassette, mini-DV, beta SP, Betamax, and VHS, so there is a lot to cover. The panelists will jointly discuss preservation of both audio and videotapes and the emerging standards for video digitization, as well as challenges of audio digitization.
