In 2010, Adam Fairholm was frustrated: there wasn’t a central place on the internet to locate music video information. This frustration, combined for a passion on music video knowledge, led Fairholm and Doug Klinger to create IMVDb.com.
“Information was scattered or not available, and the database was a way of keeping (music video knowledge) in a central place,” says Fairholm. This information is especially crucial as music videos have resurged in the past 10 years, as the internet has developed the bandwidth to support multiple video channels.
The resurgence of music videos from cable tv backwater to internet forefront is one of the many topics that Fairholm will discuss at this year’s Sprockets Music Video festival. On Saturday, July 19, Fairholm will participate in the Sprockets Industry Talks, were he will discuss how videos went from “being pushed to the margins on cable to being the dominant form of online short form entertainment in just a few years.” He’ll also discuss how VFX is pushing boundaries in today’s video climate, and how narrative trends have changed as well.
What else should be expected from the Sprockets Music Video Festival? Fairholm is also looking forward to Flickskinny True Tales cartoon, which depicts a humorous band story in cartoon form. He’s also looking forward to experiencing the local Athens music scene, and discussing music videos with fellow aficionados throughout the festival.
Fairholm offers the following advice for first-time Sprockets attendees: do not pay attention to the artist for each video. “Some of my favorite videos of all time have been for artists I had never heard before,” says Fairholm. “I also think people who don't watch a lot of music videos would be very surprised by the variety and quality of videos out there right now.”
Interested in meeting fellow film and music specialists, or simply learning more about the resurgence in music videos. The Sprockets Music Video, now in its 9th year, is held July 18-19 in Athens, GA. For information on tickets, please visit filmathens.net/sprockets.
